1634: First tavern in Boston opens. Is an instant success, because making your way in the wold today takes everything you've got, taking a break from all your worries sure would mean a lot. Wouldn't you like to get away? Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name and they're always glad you came.
1855: Congress approves $30,000 to test camels for military use; contract goes to colleagues of the vice president. Neither the camels nor the $30,000 are ever seen again.
1879: First female lawyer, Belva Ann Bennett Lockwood, argues a case before the Supreme Court. Justices decision is split 5 – 4 between "Nice rack" and "Boy I thought she'd never stop yakking."
1931: Cab Calloway records Minnie the Moocher.
1931: The Star Spangled Banner officially becomes U.S. national anthem, cruelly dashing Cab Calloway's hopes that Minnie the Moocher would be chosen.
